Job CCCXXVII

 Job 38:31-41, “Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loose the belt of Orion? Can you bring out Mazzaroth in its season? Or can you guide the Great Bear with its cubs? Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth? Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that an abundance of water may cover you? Can you send out lightnings, that they may go, and say to you, ‘Here we are!’? Who has put wisdom in the mind? Or who has given understanding to the heart? Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven, when the dust hardens in clumps, and the clods cling together? Can you hunt the prey for the lion, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, when they crouch in their dens, or lurk in their lairs to lie in wait? Who provides food for the raven, when its young ones cry to God, and wander about for lack of food?”

Given that you live in 2026 with access to vast quantities of information at your fingertips, you may not be as amazed and astounded at the mention of the Pleiades cluster, Orion’s belt, Ursa Major, also known as the Great Bear, Ursa Minor, or the Little Bear, or as God called it the Great Bear’s cubs. However, when taking into account that these words were spoken before we had telescopes, planetariums, or branches of science dedicated to the study of the cosmos, even before the time of Moses and the patriarchs, and these named constellations are still referred to today by the same name, you’ll soon realize how mind-boggling the mention of these constellations is.

God even speaks of things that science has confirmed, but that went by another name altogether, such as bringing Mazzaroth out in its season. Literally translated, Mazzaroth means a garland of crowns, and it has been proffered that bringing Mazzaroth out in its season refers to the twelve constellations of the Zodiac, a theory supported by the first chapter of Genesis wherein God said, “let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs and seasons and for days and years.”

God was not vague about what He spoke into being, nor had He forgotten any of the intricate details that went into His creation, whether referring to the cosmos or closer to home, at least as mankind is concerned. He begins with a panoramic view of the stars and constellations, zooms in to the ordinances of the heavens and earth itself, then zooms in even further to man himself, asking who has put wisdom in the mind, or given understanding to the heart? All these things God has done, and it is indisputable.

When David asked, “What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?”, it was within the context and with the full awareness of all that God had created, who He is, and how far His power extends.

God doesn’t have blind spots. He has not forgotten about you, just as He had not forgotten about Job. He has every detail well in hand, and He multi-tasks like none other. He wasn’t trying to belittle Job, or insist he was ignorant of all that He had done, for Job had known God for long enough to understand the power, majesty, and all-encompassing sovereignty He possesses.

You are not less precious than the lions who hunt for prey, or the cubs who seek to satisfy their appetite, but exponentially more so, because it was not for the lion or the ravens that God sent His only begotten Son, but for you and I.

If He is aware of and provides for the birds of the air or the beasts of the field, does He not have you well in hand? Is He not aware of your prayers, of your supplications? God knows your hurt, He knows your pain, He knows your joy, your sorrow, your loss, and everything else in between. He knows the betrayal you’ve suffered at the hands of those you once considered friends, as well as the comfort you received from those you once thought indifferent to your plight. He knows all things, and for all things there is a well-defined purpose. You may not see it, I may not see it, but we nevertheless trust that God does, and He will lead us to green pastures.

It’s never easy being in the thick of it. Anyone who says testing isn’t arduous, draining, and exhaustive has never truly been tested. Even so, once the season of testing passes, once we hear the voice of God anew, and He confirms what we’ve always known, that He’s been there all along, not afar off, or indifferent, but engaged and present, we conclude as Paul once did that the suffering of this present time is not worthy to be compared with the glory that is revealed in us.

The contemporary church has been fed the lie that coming to Jesus means you’ll nevermore shed another tear, feel pain, loss, or sadness for so long, that it’s convinced itself it’s true. Even though Jesus Himself said that we should count the cost of following after Him, understanding that it will include being hated for His name’s sake, despised by the world, and treated with scorn, we have so ignored His words that when it does occur, it surprises us and shocks us as though it was never meant to be this way.

Our expectation of the way things ought to be must be in harmony with what the Word of God says we should expect so that we are not shaken, disheartened, or discombobulated. In the world you will have tribulation. It’s a certainty, and Jesus presented it as such, but He did go on to say something that those possessing wisdom and understanding have clung to throughout the centuries: But be of good cheer, I have overcome the world!
